Case study · Launch graphics & event website

Barter Black

The Black Carpet Affair · College Park, MD · February 18–19, 2022

One visual system carried the launch: a Wix website with a cohesive brand, and a series of graphics that all mean the same thing.

01 · The starting point

Building it on her own.

Barter Black was preparing to launch the Black Carpet Affair, and she was doing it herself. The graphics to promote the event had not been made — and one poster was never going to carry a launch. She needed a run of them.

There were no sponsor graphics for the people backing the event, and the website she was building on Wix was not finished. Nothing yet said the same thing in the same voice.

So the pieces were in different places, and the launch date was not waiting. The work was to bring all of it together into one brand.

02 · The work

One system, every piece.

01

A website on Wix

The event site was built on Wix with a cohesive brand on it — the schedule of events, the venue, the ticket options, and the app demo held in one place an attendee can go to.

02

A graphics series that means the same thing

The promotion was built as a run, not a one-off. The same masthead, the same yellow, the same date block across every post, so the whole run reads as one campaign.

03

Sponsor and attendee spotlights

A layout for the people behind the event: the same design with a name, a handle, and a line that says Proud Sponsor or I'm In! — so each of them could share it as their own.

04

Pulling the launch together

The pieces came from different places and had to arrive as one thing. Everything was gathered, made to match, and put in front of the party.

The imagery

The people in the pictures had to be found.

Standard image searches returned very little that showed Black entrepreneurs as the subject of the frame rather than the background of someone else's. Sourcing these visuals took deliberate research — searching, sorting, and testing until the person in the picture belonged there.

03 · The shift

One brand, one launch.

The Black Carpet Affair took place on February 18–19, 2022 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center with one brand behind it — the same look across the promotion, the sponsor cards, and the website.

And the sponsor and attendee graphics gave the people backing the event something with their own name on it, ready to share.

The series

Three posts, one voice.

A run of graphics side by side in the feed — a spotlight, a point of view, a launch announcement — each different, all unmistakably the same brand.

Three posts from the Barter Black social feed side by side: an attendee spotlight graphic, a post on the racial funding gap, and a launch announcement — all in the same black and yellow style
